Movie Aspirations

7/24/13

So, Aaron and I both really enjoy movies. And we really enjoy watching movies that have stood the test of time and are highly acclaimed. It’s why we get so nerdy about the Oscar’s (like throwing our own parties where you have to fill out ballots) and why we gasp when we find out someone has never seen that movie. Somewhere along the way, we both decided we wanted to try to see as many Oscar-winning and nominated movies as possible, and that also turned into seeing as many movies on AFI’s 100 Greatest Movies list. And I’m fairly proud to say I’ve seen 43 of them, and a few more I’ve seen partially. But, try as we might, everyone seems to have some iconic, classic movies slip through the cracks for them. So when we had our friends Josh & Stacey over for dinner last night (who share an equal passion for watching good, iconic movies) and after MUCH gasping, speechlessness and blank stares happened (aimed at each of the 4 of us at one point or another) we decided to make our own list of “We Are Watching This NOW” movies based on the shock factor of someone not having already seen it. Like, for instance, Stacey never having seen Indiana Jones or Rocky (I mean, what?!). So, while we’re still somewhat working our way through the 100 Greatest Movies, this list of our own includes other can’t-miss movies, even if they AREN’T considered one of the 100 greatest or most influential movies of all time.

So, my questions for you are, 1) How many movies on AFI’s list have YOU seen? and 2) What are your top 5 gasp-worthy “YOU’VE NEVER SEEN THAT?” movies? We’re always looking to improve our on-going list and make sure it’s all-encompassing. ;)

  1. Due to a very goal-oriented last year of college, I’ve seen over 70 of the AFI 100 Movies list… but the movies I get most riled up about are DISNEY MOVIES. I just feel like they’re such a big part of any childhood, I get so upset when friends haven’t seen A Little Mermaid or Pocahontas!

  2. Gregg Cobert says:

I’ve gotten 46 of the movies on the AFI Top 100 so far. As for gasp worthy, I never really thought about it. But Rocky, Shawshank Redemption, Matrix, Citizen Kane (for anyone who calls themselves a movie buff), Star Wars, It’s a Wonderful Life, and my personal favorite Casablanca.

Also I have a list of movies that I can start watching no matter where in the movie it is which starts with Shawshank and Inception amongst others.

  3. Tori says:

@Sarah – I agree with you about Disney because they were a huge part of my childhood, too. My favorites are Beauty and The Beast, Robin Hood & The Lion King. It’s unacceptable to NOT have seen any of those. But really, all of them. Haha.

@Greg – Yeah, I got mega gasped at when I said I haven’t seen Shawshank or Citizen Kane, yet (I know, I know). So, they’re definitely on the list. :)

  4. Aimee says:

I’ve seen 24 of them, and probably 1/3 of those I didn’t really care for. I don’t think my entertainment style is very “classic.” :-P
