Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.

Colossians 3:23

I’m having a hard time focusing and being efficient this week. I’m recovering from being gone all of last week, and walking through a tragic death in the family, and I just haven’t been able to muster the energy to get up when I want to, or focus as much as I’d like. I’m accomplishing things, but half-heartedly. I’m working, but not with intention. I know I’m not the only one who struggles with days like this, and when I read that verse this morning it reminded me that the reason to focus and be diligent and work at things with my whole heart isn’t so that I can say I’m successful, or more driven and focused than someone else. Or to pat myself on the back. It’s not even just for the benefit of my clients or other people. It’s because I should be doing all things as unto the Lord. Even when it doesn’t seem like I have anything important or pressing on my plate. Life deserves my full effort because God deserves my full effort. And I’m grateful for that encouragement and reminder this morning. Not to condemn myself for not being as good as I could have been all week, but to encourage myself to strive for my best when no one else is looking, and even when it doesn’t directly benefit someone else. Because what matters at the end of ANY day is the Lord saying, “well done”. And He deserves my whole heart, in all things, even the daily mundane and routine.

Be encouraged, friends. Everyday is a new start and fresh opportunity, and every task, no matter how small, is a chance to give of your whole self.

Thank you for this reminder, Tori! You certainly aren’t alone – I’ve been having a difficult time this SEASON. I’m thankful for the somewhat slower pace, but I’ve also had a really hard time making the most of every day. This is a great reminder to extend grace to ourselves and to know we committed ourselves and our day to the Lord, regardless of how productive (or unproductive) the day seems in the world’s eyes.

Also, did you read this article Sarah shared yesterday? It’s fabulous and totally what we are both dealing with right now :)

  4. Thank you for this post. And I agree with Rebekah— remember to extend grace to ourselves… and SO GRATEFUL that there are other people who are dealing with this right now, too!!
